Psychedelic Integration Therapy: How to Make Sense of Your Natural Medicine Experience
You've had a profound experience. Maybe it happened through a licensed healing center here in Colorado under the Natural Medicine Health Act. Maybe it was a ceremony, a personal experience, or something completely unexpected. Whatever the path — you came back changed. And now you're trying to figure out what to do with all of it.
This is exactly where psychedelic integration therapy comes in.
As a Colorado-licensed psychedelic-assisted and integration therapist, I work with people at precisely this intersection — between a powerful inner experience and the everyday life they're returning to. Integration is not a bonus step. It is where the real healing happens.
What Is Psychedelic Integration Therapy?
Psychedelic integration therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy designed to help you process, understand, and apply insights from a psychedelic or natural medicine experience. It draws on evidence-based modalities — including ACT, somatic work, and parts-based approaches — to help you make meaning from what arose and translate it into lasting change.
Integration is not about analyzing your experience to death. It's about letting what you encountered become a living part of how you move through the world.
Why Integration Matters So Much
Research from Johns Hopkins and NYU consistently shows that the benefits of natural medicine experiences are strongly tied to what happens afterward. Without intentional integration, insights fade. Emotions that surfaced can feel destabilizing without a container. The window of neuroplasticity that opens during and after a natural medicine experience — sometimes called the "afterglow" period — closes over time.
Integration therapy makes the most of that window. It helps you:
Process difficult emotions or visions that arose during the experience
Identify the core insights and what they mean for your life
Make concrete changes in relationships, habits, and patterns
Address any challenging material that came up — sometimes called a "difficult experience"
Build on the shifts that began during the session and carry them forward
What Psychedelic Integration Sessions Look Like
Sessions are conversational, collaborative, and deeply personal. There is no formula. What we explore depends entirely on what arose for you. Common themes include:
Grief, loss, and unprocessed emotion that surfaced during the experience
Shifts in identity, values, or sense of self
Visions, symbols, or metaphors that felt meaningful but remain unclear
Insights about relationships, family patterns, or attachment wounds
Spiritual or existential questions the experience opened up
We move at your pace. Some people need one or two integration sessions. Others benefit from an ongoing process that unfolds over months.
Who Is Integration Therapy For?
Psychedelic integration therapy at Soul Yoga Counseling is open to:
Individuals who have completed natural medicine services at a licensed Colorado healing center
People who have had psychedelic experiences in other contexts — ceremonies, personal use, or clinical research — and want professional support processing them
Anyone navigating a challenging or confusing experience from their past that they haven't been able to fully integrate
You do not need to have used psychedelics recently, or at all, to benefit from integration-informed therapy. Many of the tools we use — somatic awareness, meaning-making, parts work — are powerful on their own.
Integration vs. Preparation: Understanding the Full Arc
If you are considering natural medicine services under Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act, integration therapy is the third phase of the process — following preparation and administration sessions. All three phases are required under the regulated program, and for good reason. They form a coherent arc of healing:
Preparation sets the intention and builds safety
Administration opens the door
Integration walks you through it
At Soul Yoga Counseling, I provide all three phases as a licensed facilitator for eligible Colorado residents.
A Note on "Difficult Experiences"
Not every natural medicine experience is peaceful or pleasant. Some people encounter fear, grief, difficult memories, or confusing visions. This does not mean something went wrong — in fact, these experiences are often the most transformative. But they do benefit enormously from skilled, compassionate integration support.
If you've had a challenging psychedelic experience and have been carrying it alone, please reach out. You don't have to make sense of it by yourself.
